Developing a diverse, internationally competitive and globally-engaged
workforce of engineers and scientists requires educational
environments that nurture learners to explore and reach their
potential regardless of gender, ethnicity or learning preferences. The
shortage of women at all levels in engineering and the physical
sciences is well documented. We believe that really changing how women
are treated, how the classroom is managed, how teaching is performed,
and how graduate students are mentored, all depend on numerous
individual faculty.
The Dwight Look College of Engineering and the College of Science at
Texas A&M University are being funded by the National Science Foundation
in a demonstration project entitled Gender Equity Project: Changing
Faculty Through Learning Communities. Our project will help faculty
improve five strategic disciplines that underpin improvement of learning
environments for women, underrepresented minorities, and all students.
Funding for the Gender Equity Project at Texas A&M is supported by
the National Science Foundation. (Grant Number 0120825).
